A status report on tri- and dicoordinated cations of boron is presented. Tricoordinated 1,3,2-dioxaborinium salts, described in the literature, are actually tetracoordinated species. However, salts of type R//2BL multiplied by (times) X can be prepared from boron triflates R//2Btf (R equals n-C//4H//9, C//6H//5, 1,3-dimethyl-1,3,2-diazaborolidinyl) and 2,6-lutidine, or by addition of triflic acid on 2-dimethylamino-1,3,2-diazaborolidines. The formation and stabilization of dicoordinated boron cations of three types depends both on electronic and steric factors as well as on the nature of the counter ion. Ligand exchange reactions in boron chemistry under electrophilic conditions may involve dicoordinated boron species.
