A one-pot method for the efficient preparation of aromatic nitriles from aldehydes using ammonia, magnesium sulfate, and manganese dioxide

A one-pot and efficient preparation of aromatic nitriles from the corresponding aldehydes was accomplished by treatment with 2 M ammonia solution in 2-propanol, magnesium sulfate, and manganese dioxide in THF at room temperature. This method was found to be compatible with a variety of functionalities such as hydroxyl, ester, and amide.

A facile one-pot method is presented for the synthesis of nitriles from the corresponding primary alcohols by nickel-catalyzed oxidation with tetrabutylammonium peroxydisulfate in the presence of ammonium hydrogen carbonate under basic aqueous conditions. This convenient synthetic method provides an easy and simple access to various aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic nitriles in excellent yields with very high purity.
