Description
Perfluorohexane-1-sulphonic acid, also known as perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), is a perfluoroalkanesulfonic acid that belongs to the perfluoroalkyl family of chemicals. It is a six-carbon compound in which all thirteen hydrogens attached to carbons have been replaced by fluorines. PFHxS is slightly soluble in water and can react with strong oxidizing agents. Upon decomposition, it can form carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and oxides of sulfur.
Uses
Used in Firefighting Foam:
Perfluorohexane-1-sulphonic acid was used as a component in firefighting foam due to its ability to enhance the foam's effectiveness in extinguishing fires. Its persistence in the environment, however, led to its phase-out.
Used in Carpet Treatment Solutions:
PFHxS was utilized as a stain and water repellent in carpet treatment solutions, providing protection and ease of maintenance. However, due to environmental concerns and regulations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, its use in this application has been phased out.
Used in 3M Products:
Perfluorohexane-1-sulphonic acid was once widely used by 3M as a stain and water repellent in various products, but it was eventually phased out due to environmental regulations and concerns about its persistence in the environment.
