Twigs of Skimmia malanocarpa (fam.Rutaceae) affords scopoletin methyl ether, isocopoletin, umbelliferone and (+)-ulopterol, taraxerone and β-sitosterol. (+)-Ulopterol (I) has been converted into 6-(2'-oxo-3'-methyl)butyl-7-methoxycoumarin (IV) on treatment with p-toluenesulphonic acid effecting a pinacol-pinacolone type rearrangement involving a hydride shift.On treatment with BBr3 in CH2Cl2, I gives 6-(2',3'-dibromo-3'-methyl)butyl-7-hydroxycoumarin (III). 13C NMR spectral data of (+)-ulopterol are also given.
