The action of triethylamine on the readily obtainable N-benzyltrichloroacetimidoyl chloride gives a high yield of N-benzylideneperchlorovinylamine (CCl2=CClN=CHC6H5), which adds chlorine under mild conditions and gives a mixture of two chlorotropic tautomers, i. e., N-benzylideneperchloroethylamine and N-1-chlorobenzyltrichloroacetimidoyl chloride. It was possible to demonstrate the chlorotropic equilibrium in the -CCl2-N=CH- -CCl=N-CHCl- system by means of the PMR spectra.
