In the reaction of 5-alkyl-5-nitro-1,3-diheterocycloalkanes containing oxygen and nitrogen as heteroatoms with sodium alcoholates in the corresponding alcohol 5-alkyl-1,3-diheterocycloalkanes, the corresponding aldehydes (or ketones), and diols are formed.A mechanism is proposed for the formation of the reaction products, including the stage of one-electron transfer from the alcoholate to the nitro group of the 5-alkyl-5-nitro-1,3-diheterocycloalkane.
