Methods for the synthesis of optical isomers of monoamine complexones derived from dicarboxylic amino acids and their complexes with 3d-metals are considered. The physicochemical properties of the compounds in question were studied and a number of specific properties of the complexes were revealed. An approach was proposed to the study of quantitative relationships between the chemical composition, structure, and properties of chemical substances.

Aspartic acid is reacted with prussic acid and formaldehyde to give an amino-polycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof represented by-the following formula: STR1 wherein each of R1 and R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal or an ammonium group; and each of R3 and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or --CH2 --COOR1, provided that R3 and R4 do not represent a hydrogen atom simultaneously. The amino-polycarboxylic acid which is readily biodegradable and has an excellent chelating ability can be obtained from aspartic acid in a high yield and in a high purity.
