N-methyl-5-nitro-pyrimidine-2,4-diamine, also known as metol or AMIDOL, is a chemical compound used mainly in the production of photographic developer solutions. It is a water-soluble yellow powder with the molecular formula C6H8N4O2, and is classified as a substituted pyrimidine. Metol is known for its ability to produce fine grain and sharpness in black and white photographs. It is also occasionally used as a reagent in organic synthesis, but its primary use remains in photography.
