2-[(2-anilino-2-oxoethyl)amino]-N-phenylacetamide, also known as benzocaine, is a local anesthetic commonly used to relieve pain or itching caused by minor skin irritations, sore throat, sunburn, teething pain, vaginal or rectal irritation, ingrown toenails, hemorrhoids, and many other sources of minor pain on a surface of the body. It is a white, odorless, crystalline substance with a slightly bitter taste. It is sparingly soluble in water but highly soluble in ethanol, ether and chloroform.
