General Description
Suxamethonium bromide, also known as succinylcholine, is a neuromuscular blocking agent used to induce muscle relaxation during general anesthesia or to facilitate endotracheal intubation. It works by causing transient depolarization and paralysis of the skeletal muscles by mimicking the action of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. This results in a brief period of muscle paralysis, allowing for intubation or surgery. Suxamethonium bromide is rapidly metabolized by plasma cholinesterases, which allows for a short duration of action, typically lasting 5-10 minutes.
