A short and convenient synthesis of 3,7-dimethyl-1 -hydroxy-2( E),6( E)-dodecadien-11-one and 2,6-dimethyl-2-(E),6(E)-octadiene-1,8-diol diisovalerate

Synthesis of 3,7-dimethyl-1-hydroxy-2-E), 6(E)-dodecadien-11-one (1), a component of Mediterranean algae, has been achieved by making use of selenium(IV) oxide/tert-butyl hydroperoxide oxidation and zinc-copper induced conjugate addition using ultrasonic waves. Synthesis of 2,6-dimethyl-2(E),6(E)-octadiene-1,8-diol diisovalerate (2), a sex pheromone of Agriotes tauricus has also been described.
