3-Methyl-2,4-dithiouracil, also known as methimazole, is a thioamide antithyroid drug that is used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. It works by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland. It is also sometimes used in the preparation of radioactive iodine therapies for hyperthyroidism. Methimazole can cause side effects such as rash, itching, and agranulocytosis, and should be used with caution in patients with preexisting liver disease.
