(E)-2-(2-methylpropyl)but-2-enedioic acid, also known as methylmalonic acid, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C7H12O4. It is a dicarboxylic acid and is an intermediate in the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids. Methylmalonic acid is produced in the body and its levels can be measured in the blood and urine to assess certain metabolic disorders. It is also used as a biochemical marker for vitamin B12 deficiency, as the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA is dependent on this vitamin. Methylmalonic acid can also be produced synthetically and used in the production of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals.
