Five-Coordinate Dioxygen Adducts of Cobalt(II) Complexes

A series of five-coordinate cobalt(II) triphosphine complexes are reported and their electronic structures determined via EPR.Both distorted trigonal bipyramidal and tetragonal pyramidal geometries are obtained with ligand variation.Complexes with both geometries reversibly bind dioxygen but dissociate a phosphine in the process to form a novel series of five-coordinate terminally bound dioxygen complexes.The implication of this new type of adduct to the requirements for a ring-bonded mode of cobalt-dioxygen binding is discussed.
