If dibromo-N-methylmaleimide (DBMI, 1) is irradiated in the presence of biphenyl, N-phenylpyrrole (6), N-phenylindole (11), pyridine, and 4,4'-bipyridyl-dihydrate (18), the phenanthrene derivative 4 as well as the monosubstituted compounds 9, 12, the 2:1-adduct 17, and the condensed heterocycles 10, 14-16, and 19 are formed by anellating photosubstitution of the bromine. The individual direction of the photoreaction is influenced both by solvent and sensitizer.
