The kinetics of the alkylation of 5-phenyltetrazole salt by (dimethyl sulfate)-d6 in acetonitrile and the ratio of the reaction products were investigated. As in alkylation by dimethyl sulfate, the controlling stage is the addition of (dimethyl sulfate)-d6 to the 5-phenyltetrazole anion. When dimethyl sulfate is replaced by (dimethyl sulfate)-d6, a secondary kinetic isotope effect kH/kD = 0.85 is observed (25 deg.C).The obtained data show that the alkylation of 5-phenyltetrazole salts has a two-stage mechanism.
