The stereochemistry and dynamic behavior of square-planar and square-pyramidal complexes of bivalent palladium and platinum have been investigated by examining the 1H NMR spectra of appropriate derivatives of each metal containing the diastereoisomers and enantiomers of o-phenylenebis(methylphenylarsine) and its phosphorus analogue. Whereas the square-planar bis(bidentate)metal(II) derivatives of both ligands are kinetically stable and retain their structural integrity in solution, the corresponding square-pyramidal chloro cations undergo rapid axial ligand site exchange, redistribution of di(tertiary arsine) ligands in the case of palladium, and intramolecular isomerization of the chelate rings for both metals containing the various stereoisomers of either ligand.
