, p. 750 - 752 (2007/10/02)
A large number of 1,4-disubstituted-2,3-(1',8'-naphthylene)-fluorenones (VI) and -fluorenes (V), i. e. 7,13-disubstituted-8(H)-oxo- and 8H-indenofluoranthenes have been prepared. The preferred method of the synthesis is the Diels-Alder reaction of 2,5-disubstituted-3,4-(1',8'-naphthylene)cyclopentadienones (I) with phenylpropiolic esters (II) to give fluoranthene derivatives (IV).The latter, on cyclisation and reduction yield the desired fluorenes.Phenylpropiolic acids (VII) are also added to I to give fluoranthenes (VIII) and fluoranthene-8-carboxylic acids (IX).The acids (IX) undergo smooth cyclisation to fluorenones (VI) on treatment with conc. sulphuric acid.
