Molecular Complexes and Radicals of Procaine

Reactions of procaine as an electron donor with polynitrobenzenes, iodine, and various ?-acceptors, e.g. 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), chloranil, tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and tetranitrofluorene (TeNF), were examined.Depending on the polarity of the solvent, different coloured charge-transfer complexes and radicals developed. These complexes and radicals can be used for the quantitative determination of procaine in mixture with caffeine and to distinguish procaine from other local anaesthetic and other bases on thin-layer chromatograms.Molecular complexes between procaine and caffeine or theophylline are not detectable by difference and derivative spectrophotometry.
