Complexes of the type ML2X2 have been isolated by a metal ion catalysed in situ template synthesis. The synthetic method involves the reaction of ethanolic solutions of the metal salts, 2,4-pentanedione and hydrazine hydrate in the molar ratio 1:2:4.The compounds have been characterised on the basis of analytical, infrared and electronic spectral and magnetic moment data.Infrared spectral data show that 2,4-pentanedione dihydrazone acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the nitrogen atoms of the azomethine group. The nickel(II) and cobalt(II) complexes are spin-free paramagnetic with nearly octahedral arrangement of the ligand atoms around the metal ions whereas iron(II) complexes are spin-paired diamagnetic.
