Re2O7 is reduced by PEt3 in the presence of L (L = pyridine, 4-methylpyridine, 4-phenylpyridine) to yield the mixed-valent Re5+Re7+ salts ReO2L4+ReO4-. ReO3 also reacts directly with pyridine to give the same compound. ReO2(4-Mepy)4ReO4 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1: a = 10.180 (2) ?, b = 10.695 (3) ?, c = 13.261 (3) ?, α = 103.17 (2)°, β = 99.64 (2)°, γ = 96.47 (2)°, Z = 4. The structure consists of two crystallographically independent centrosymmetric trans-ReO2L4+ cations and tetrahedral ReO4- anions in general positions.
