The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound has been determined from diffractometer data by the heavy-atom method.The crystals are triclinic, space group , with unit-cell dimensions a = 11.449(4), b = 11.606(4), c = 12.060(3) Angstroem, α = 94.33(2), β = 93.22(2), γ = 113.33(3) deg, U = 1 460.8(8) Angstroem3, and Z = 2; R = 0.059 for 2 633 observed reflections /= 3.0>.The PhTeCl3I(1-) anion is a square-based pyramid with a lone pair in the sixth position of an octahedron: Te-C 2.15(1), Te-Cl 2.565(4)-2.663(3), and Te-I 2.837(2) Angstroem.Allowing for disorder, corrected values for Te-Cl and Te-I are 2.51 and 3.04 Angstroem respectively.
