Description

ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN, also known as α-lactalbumin, is a globular protein found in the whey fraction of milk. It is a small, compact, and highly conserved protein with a molecular weight of approximately 14.2 kDa. ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN plays a crucial role in the regulation of lactose synthase, a complex enzyme system responsible for lactose synthesis in mammalian milk. It is known for its ability to bind calcium ions and has a unique tertiary structure stabilized by four disulfide bonds.
Source:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN is primarily sourced from the whey protein of bovine milk. It can also be found in human milk, but in lower concentrations compared to bovine milk.
Production Methods:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN can be isolated and purified from milk whey through various methods, including ultrafiltration, ion exchange chromatography, and gel filtration chromatography. These methods help to separate ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN from other whey proteins and lactose, resulting in a highly pure and concentrated product.

Uses

Used in Biotechnology and Research Applications:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN is used as a research tool for the isolation and analysis of restriction endonuclease digestive patterns of chromosomal DNA from Mycobacterium paratuberculosis and other Mycobacterium species. It aids in understanding the genetic makeup and behavior of these bacteria, which are important for various biotechnological and medical applications.
Used in Neurodegenerative Disease Research:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN has been utilized in a study to test if the neuroendocrine protein 7B2 suppresses the aggregation of neurodegenerative disease-related proteins. This research is crucial for understanding the underlying mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and developing potential therapeutic strategies.
Used in Cell Culture Applications:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN from bovine milk has been used as a supplement in the basal medium for various cell cultures. It provides essential nutrients and growth factors required for the growth and maintenance of different cell types, making it an important component in cell culture media.
Used as a Marker in SDS-PAGE:
ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN has been used as a marker for sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). It serves as a reference protein to estimate the molecular weight of other proteins during gel electrophoresis, allowing for accurate analysis and comparison of protein samples.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Alters the substrate specificity of galactosyltransferase to increase the rate of lactose formation; the complex of galactosyltransferase and α-lactalbumin is called lactose synthase. Complexes of α-lactalbumin with oleic acid show drastically different activities than α-lactalbumin alone, being strongly cytotoxic to tumor cells. The complex is referred to as HAMLET (human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells).

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 9051-29-0 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 9,0,5 and 1 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 2 and 9 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 9051-29:
(6*9)+(5*0)+(4*5)+(3*1)+(2*2)+(1*9)=90
90 % 10 = 0
So 9051-29-0 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
