Enol ethers 1 are acylated by malonyl dichlorides 2 to yield pentanoic acid derivatives 3; cyclisation of 3 with conc. sulfuric acid/10percent SO3 results in the formation of 6-unsubstituted 4-hydroxy-2H-pyran-2-ones 4.The formation of pyrylium salts is decisive for the avoidance of side reactions.Spectroscopic investigations establish the structure of the compounds 4 as α-pyranones B.
