A series of (η1,η3-octadienediyl)palladium complexes, [Pd(L)(η1,η3-C8H12)] and [Pd(L)(η1,η3-Me2C8H 10)], has been prepared by reacting bis(η3-2-methylallyl)palladium with donor ligands and butadiene or isoprene. The reactions occur in a stepwise manner through the intermediacy of [Pd(L)(η1,η3-allyl)2] and [{Pd-(L)(μ-η3-allyl)}2] complexes. The η1,η3-octadienediyl systems react with olefins such as methyl acrylate to give (η2-olefin)2Pd-L complexes and with acids to give (η2,η3-octadienyl)- and/or (η3-octadienyl)palladium complexes.
