As a chemiluminescent agent for direct chemiluminescent immunoassay, it can be used for the detection and analysis of antigens, antibodies, proteins, etc. In the process of detection and analysis, no additional catalyst is needed. When DMAE-NHS is oxidized by H_2O_2 in alkaline medium, it passes through an intermediate of ketone dioxide to produce electrically excited N-methyl acridine, which releases photons at 430 nm when it returns to the ground state.
