The reaction occurs with reagent carbonate buffer (pH 9.5) and solvents H2O, acetonitrile at temperature of 55 °C. The yield is 67 %.

1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione can react with Nitroethane to get 2-Methyl-1,3-dioxa-7,8-diaza-cyclopenta[l]phenanthrene.
