Zinc stearate Safety Profile

Poison by intratracheal route. Inhalation of zinc stearate has been reported as causing pulmonary fibrosis. A nuisance dust. Combustible when exposed to heat or flame. To fight fire, use water, foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of ZnO. See also ZINC COMPOUNDS.

  Zinc stearate , with CAS number of 557-05-1, can be called Dermarone ; Dibasic zinc stearate ; Hidorin D 523 ; octadecanoic acid, zinc salt (2:1) ; Zinc dioctadecanoate . It is a white powder with fatty acid odour, Zinc stearate is non-flammable but combustible, be incompatible with oxidizing agents, dilute acids. Emits acrid smoke and fumes of ZnO when heated to decomposition. Zinc stearate (CAS NO.557-05-1) is used as a releasing agent and lubricant in the plastics and rubber industry, can also be used as follows: As a synergic stabilizer for Ba/Cd and Pb stabilizer systems, as a gloss imparting agent in paint industry, as a metal release agent in rubber, polyurethane and polyester processing system, as a die release agent in powder metallurgy, as a chief ingredient in "fanning powder", used by magicians performing card manipulation to decrease the friction between the cards and as a libricant in cosmetics to improve texture.
