Spinosad, also known as Spinosad, is a macrolide type of pollution-free and efficient biological insecticide extracted from Saccharopolyspora spinosa. The parent strain that produces multicidin, Saccharopolyspora spinosa Metrz & Yao, was originally isolated from an abandoned distillery in the Caribbean. Researchers at Dow Agrosciences (now Dow Agrosciences) found that the bacteria produced compounds with high insecticidal activity. The practical product was A mixture of spinosyn A and spinosyn D, hence the name spinosad. Docomycin has a novel mode of action, which can continuously activate the target insect acetylcholine nicotinic receptor, but its binding site is different from that of nicotine and imidacloprid. Docomycin can also affect GABA receptors, but the mechanism of action is unclear. It is not known if there is cross resistance with other types of insecticides. These compounds can cause rapid death in target plant-feeding insects such as caterpillars, leaf miners, thrips, and leaf-feeding beetles, and although management strongly urges use when resistance is not present, the compound's moderate residual activity reduces the likelihood of resistance and colony occurrence. When applied at 12-150g /hm, no drug harm was found.
