Disulfano complexes of the type cis-(PPh3)2Pt(phth)SSR, where phth = phthalimido and R = CH2Ph, CH2CH2CH3, CHMe2, 4-C6H4Me, phth, have been prepared via oxidative addition of RSS(phth) to (PPh3)2Pt(C2H4), wherein S-N bond cleavage occurs. Similarly, the thiolato analogues cis-(PPh3)2Pt(phth)SR were obtained by using RS(phth). cis-(PPh3)2Pt(phth)SSR complexes, where R = CH2Ph, phth, are desulfurized by PPh3 to give cis-(PPh3)2Pt(phth)SCH2Ph and cis-(PPh3)2Pt(phth)2, respectively. Treatment of cis-L2Pt(SCH2Ph)2, where L = PPh3, PMePh2, PMe2Ph, with (phth)SS(phth) resulted in stepwise displacement of the phenylmethanethiolato ligands by phthalimido groups to give first cis-L2Pt(phth)SCH2Ph and upon further reaction cis-L2Pt(phth)2 for L = PPh3, PMePh2 accompanied by the formation of organic polysulfanes RSxR, where x = 2-4. At -20 °C trans-(PMe2Ph)2Pt(phth)SCH2Ph was isolated. The complexes cis-L2Pt(phth)2 were also prepared from cis-L2PtCl2 and potassium phthalimide.
