1H NMR study of transformations of monochlorodimethyl ether in the presence of zinc chloride

Solvolytic reactions occurring in commercial monochlorodimethyl ether in zinc chloride solutions were studied by 1H NMR. The reason is discussed for the higher selectivity of zinc chloride in comparison with titanium(IV) chloride as chloromethylation catalyst in production of ion-exchange resins.
