The geometric structure of camphorquinone semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones has been established by spectral methods.Since the barrier to the Z,E isomerization of acylhydrazones is lowered when the electron-acceptor influence of the acyl residue is increased and depends little on the dielectric constant of the solvent, the isomerization takes place according to an inversion mechanism.The isomerization is catalyzed by solvents with high basicity.
