Potassium salts of 3-hydroxypyridines undergo a condensation reaction with 4,4-dihalodiphenylsulfones.In DMSO the C-C or C-N-coupling rate is rather low.The main secondary reaction is the formation of 2-pyridone radicals.Polymers can be obtained by polycondensation with the dipotassium salts of 3,5-dihydroxypyridine, but then 4,4'-difluorodiphenylsulfone has to be used.Oligomers are easily soluble in the usual solvents. But higher polymers are only soluble in polar solvents (DMSO, DMF).The purified polymer begins to loose weight in thermogravimetric analysis only from 400 deg C onwards. One of the oligomers has been tested as a stationary phase in gas-liquid chromathography. It can be used from 205 deg C onwards. Its polarity is slightly higher than that of Carbowax 20 M and PS 179.Its character, at the same time aromatic and basic, enables it to combine the advantages of both phases : good affinity towards polar functions and towards aromatic structures.
