Guanidine is used as a fungicide in the agricultural industry. Two of its derivatives, dodine and iminoctadine, are employed as agricultural fungicides. Dodine was reported in 1957, while iminoctadine is a newer member of the multisite inhibitor group of fungicides. Both of these compounds have one or two guanidine groups connected to a long chain alkyl or iminodi(polymethylene) group, making them cationic surface-active agents that help protect crops from fungal infections.
Biological Functions
Guanidine hydrochloride is the drug of choice in the
management of patients with myasthenic syndrome and
may be of use in the treatment of botulinum intoxication.
Its ability to enhance transmitter release may involve a
block of K+ channels and prolongation of the nerve action
potential.
