EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: white solid.
Danger! Causes burns by all exposure routes.
Target Organs: Eyes, skin, mucous membranes.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye burns. Contact may cause ulceration of the conjunctiva
and cornea.
Skin:
Causes skin burns.
Ingestion:
Causes gastrointestinal tract burns.
Inhalation:
Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract.
Extremely destructive to the mucous membranes and upper respiratory
tract.
Chronic:
Effects may be delayed.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme
diately.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes.
Ingestion:
Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious
and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do not use
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if victim ingested or inhaled the
substance; induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket
mask equipped with a one-way valve or other proper respiratory
medical device.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Containers
may explode in the heat of a fire. Contact with metals may evolve
flammable hydrogen gas. Runoff from fire control or dilution water
may cause pollution.
Extinguishing Media:
Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to
extinguish surrounding fire.
Flash Point: None.
Autoignition Temperature: None.
Explosion Limits, Lower:None.
Upper: None.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 3; Flammability: 0; Instability: 1
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal
container. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the
Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions.
Provide ventilation.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Use only in a well-ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and
accumulation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not
ingest or inhale.
Storage:
Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool dry place at
room temperature, 60-80?F. If material is left at temperatures
slightly above room temperature, it will dissolve in its own water of
hydration. Contains a large amount of water of hydration (48 moles
of water to 1 mole of Phosphotungstic acid). Refrigeration may be
necessary.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
