Section 3 - Hazards Identification
|
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: clear yellow liquid. Flash Point: 54.4 deg C.
Danger! Poison! May be fatal or cause blindness if
swallowed. May cause allergic respiratory and skin reaction. Harmful
if absorbed through skin or if inhaled. Contains formaldehyde which
can cause cancer. Flammable liquid and vapor.
May cause severe eye and skin irritation with possible burns. May
cause central nervous system depression. This substance has caused
adverse reproductive and fetal effects in animals. May cause kidney
damage. Cannot be made non-poisonous.
Target Organs: Kidneys, central nervous system,
respiratory system, eyes, skin.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause severe eye irritation. May cause irreversible eye
injury. Contact may cause ulceration of the conjunctiva and cornea.
Skin:
May cause severe skin irritation. May be absorbed through the skin
in harmful amounts. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic
reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Ingestion:
May cause kidney damage. May cause systemic toxicity with acidosis.
May cause hemorrhaging of the digestive tract. May cause corrosion
and permanent tissue destruction of the esophagus and digestive
tract.
May cause systemic toxicity including central nervous system
depression, convulsions, coma, and possible death due to respiratory
failure.
Inhalation:
May cause asthmatic attacks due to allergic sensitization of the
respiratory tract. May cause pulmonary edema and severe respiratory
disturbances. If ethylene glycol is heated or misted in work areas
that are poorly ventilated, vapor/mist may accumulate and cause
respiratory irritation and symptoms such as headache and nausea.
Chronic:
Contains formaldehyde which can cause cancer in humans. There is
sufficient evidence that formaldehyde causes nasopharyngeal cancer in
humans, a rare cancer in developed countries. There is limited
evidence that formaldehyde causes cancer of the nasal cavity and
paranasal sinuses and strong but not sufficient evidence for
leukemia.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally
lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately. Do
NOT allow victim to rub eyes or keep eyes closed.
Skin:
Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes
while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if
irritation develops or persists. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy
contaminated shoes.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4
cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an
unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Water runoff can cause environmental damage. Dike
and collect water used to fight fire. Vapors can travel to a source
of ignition and flash back. Combustible liquid. Can form explosive
mixtures at temperatures above the flashpoint. Use water spray to
keep fire-exposed containers cool.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or
alcohol-resistant foam.
Flash Point: 54.4 deg C ( 129.92 deg F)
Autoignition Temperature: Not available.
Explosion Limits, Lower:Not available.
Upper: Not available.
NFPA Rating:
(estimated) Health: 3; Flammability: 2; Instability: 0
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Wear a self contained breathing apparatus and appropriate personal
protection. (See Exposure Controls, Personal Protection section).
Neutralize spill with sodium bicarbonate. Use water spray to disperse
the gas/vapor. Remove all sources of ignition. Absorb spill using an
absorbent, non-combustible material such as earth, sand, or
vermiculite. Do not use combustible materials such as sawdust.
Provide ventilation.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Ground and bond containers when transferring
material. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Empty
containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be
dangerous. Keep container tightly closed. Do not ingest or inhale. Do
not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose
empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames. Use only with
adequate ventilation. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame.
Storage:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
|
Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate general or
local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne concentrations below the
permissible exposure limits. See 29CFR 1910.1048 for regulatory
requirements pertaining to all occupational exposures to
formaldehyde, i.e., from formaldehyde gas, its solutions, and
materials that release formaldehyde.
