S-Adenosyl Methionine or SAM-e is a naturally occurring nootropic supplement, commonly used in Europe as a potential treatment for depression and arthritis. SAM-e has not been approved by the FDA, but only because it is labeled as a dietary supplement, and although many clinical studies have been performed in Europe it has not been done on the scale required for FDA aproval.
