Paclitaxelis a mitotic inhibitused in cancer chemotherapy. It was discovered in aNational Cancer Institute program at the Research Triangle Institute in 1967when Monroe E. Wall Mansukh C. Wani isolated it from the bark of thePacific yew tree, Taxus brevifolia named it 'taxol'. When it was developedcommercially by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) the generic name was changed to'paclitaxel' the BMS compound is sold under the trademark 'TAXOL'. In thisformulation, paclitaxel is dissolved in CremophEL ethanol, as a deliveryagent. A newer formulation, in which paclitaxel is bound to albumin, is sold underthe trademark Abraxane. Paclitaxel is now used to treat patients with lung,ovarian, breast cancer, head neck cancer, advanced forms of Kaposi'ssarcoma. Paclitaxel is also used fthe prevention of restenosis. Paclitaxelstabilizes microtubules as a result, interferes with the normal breakdownof microtubules during cell division. Together with docetaxel, it forms thedrug category of the taxanes.
