Siberian cocklebur is an annual spring weed long used in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It grows mainly in northern Iran, Siberia, China, Japan, and other parts of central Asia. Siberian cocklebur belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its flavor has been described as pungent. The herb has an acrid and sweet taste.
Siberian cocklebur contains the toxic glucosides, atractyloside and carboxyastractyloside. Based on secondary sources, these toxic compounds may target tissues and organs of high metabolic activity and cause a severe hepatitis with fatal liver failure. Also, these compounds may interact with detoxification or transformation systems in the liver at doses not thought to induce cytolysis. It has been suggested that this is due to blocking ADP-to-ATP conversion through inhibition of cytochrome P450. Clinical manifestations may be related to induced hypoglycemia, neurovegetative disorders, or subsequent renal failure.
Indications anecdotally treated by Siberian cocklebur include high blood sugar, headache, common cold, sinusitis with nasal discharge, pain of the extremities, sciatic neuralgia, eczema, urticaria with itching from German measles, sarcoptidosis, tinea and leprosy, arthritis with muscle contracture, dispelling wind, dampness in muscles and skin, relief of nasal obstructions, alleviation of pain, chronic bronchitis, chronic sinus inflammation, headache with blurring vision, urticaria, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Most studies on Siberian cocklebur have been conducted in animal and in vitro models. The research data in humans are very limited; therefore, further research is required in humans before it can be indicated for any condition.
