Biota is a slow-growing tree native to China. It can reach a height of about 45 feet,

and grows best in moist soil. When cultivated,biota produces vast quantities of seeds.

Both the seeds and branches are used in healing. In Chinese herbalism, biota seeds are 

associated primarily with the heart and digestive system.

The seeds are usually used as a sedative, and are often a component of various shen, 

or spirit, tonics. Among the conditions biotaseed is used to treat are irritability, insomnia, 

memory loss, anxiety, constipation and night sweats.

Because of the oily nature of the herb, it can help with constipation.
