The cancer associated anorexia-cachexia syndrome is observed in 80% of patients with advanced stage cancer, and it is a very powerful prognostic indicator of poor outcome and poor quality of life. Moreover, this syndrome is also one of the major obstacles in cancer chemotherapy. Ghrelin is an orexigenic hormone which has been proposed to prevent anorexia. Therefore, this experiment is designed to determine whether addition of the Ghrelin agonist growth hormone releasing peptide 2 (GHRP-2) to cytotoxic therapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) prevents anorexia associated with chemotherapy in cancer cachectic mice.
