Cobicistat (COBI) is not an antiretroviral medication—it has no activity against HIV. It’s a “pharmacoenhancer” which, like Norvir (ritonavir), “boosts” drug levels of some HIV drugs, including most PIs and the integrase inhibitor elvitegravir. Cobicistat is currently only available in combination with tenofovir, emtricitabine, and elvitegravir in the form of Stribild, but we expect approval of a stand-alone version this year, as well as combinations of cobicistat with Prezista and with Reyataz. The main advantage cobicistat has over Norvir is that it will be made available for co-formulation with other drugs.
