 Introduction:

This herb is theroot tuber of Ophio-pogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker-Gawl (family Liliaceae), which is produced inall parts of China.It is dug in summer,washed clean, rid of the rootlets, dried in the sun, and used unprepared. This herb, which is very similar both biologically and in its actions to wild Asparagus root, is primarily used as a Yin tonic, and especially as a Heart and Lung tonic. It is excellent for moistening any dryness in the body. It is considered to be a cold herb, and is said by thes to be a major Spirit tonic herb.

Function:

1. Dry cough withsticky sputum or phthisical cough withhemoptysis. For the former, it is often used with mulberry leaf, bitter apricotkernel, donkey-hidegelatin and unpre-pared gypsum, as in Decoction forRelie-ving Dryness of the Lung(Qingzao Jiufei Tang); for the latter,it is often given with lucid asparagusroot, as in Extractof Ophiopogon and Lucid Asparagus(Erdong Gao).

2. In the treat-ment of insufficiencyof the stomach- yin manifested as dry tongue and thirst, it is often used with glehnia root, dried rehmannia root,and fragrant solomon-seal rhizome, as in Stomach- nourishing Decoction (YiweiTang).

3. Vexation and insomnia. In case they are induced by invasion of the heartand yin system by heat, it is oftenprescribed with coptisroot, red sage root and lophatherum, as in Decoction for Clearing Away Heat in the Ying System(Qingying Tang); if they are caused by internal heat due todeficiency of yin, it is often used along with scrophu-laria root, dried rehmannia root, wildjujube seed, etc., as in Cardiotonic Pill(Tianwang Buxin Dan).

4.In the treatmentof constipation dueto dryness of the bowels, it can be used with dried rehmannia root and scrophularia root, i.e. Fluid-increasingDecoction ( Zengye Tang).
