Phosmet Usage And Synthesis
Usage Phosmet is used as a pesticide to protect crops and vegetation. Insecticide.
General Description Off-white crystalline solid with an offensive odor. Used as an insecticide and acaricide.
Reactivity Profile Organophosphates, such as Phosmet, are susceptible to formation of highly toxic and flammable phosphine gas in the presence of strong reducing agents such as hydrides. Partial oxidation by oxidizing agents may result in the release of toxic phosphorus oxides. Storage above 113 F, may lead to decomposition. [EPA, 1998].
Health Hazard Phosmet is an organophosphorus pesticide. Phosmet is very toxic; the probable oral lethal dose for humans is 50-500 mg/kg, or between 1 teaspoon and 1 oz. for a 150 lb. person. It is a cholinesterase inhibitor and has central nervous system effects. Oral lethal doses in humans have been reported at 50 mg/kg.
Fire Hazard (Non-Specific -- Organophosphorus Pesticide, n.o.s.). Container may explode in heat of fire. Fire and runoff from fire control water may produce irritating or poisonous gases. Storage above 113F, may lead to decomposition.
