Methixene hydrochloride, also known as Methixene monohydrochloride monohydrate or Methixene HCl, is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic drug with a relatively high selectivity for the gastrointestinal tract. It is an anticholinergic agent used in the management of conditions in which there is hypermotility, as in the case of functional bowel disorders, pylorospasm, biliary dyskinesia, spastic colon, duodenitis, and gastritis and in other disorders in which it is desirable to diminish even normal motility, as in the case of duodenal ulcer. It does not diminish gastric secretion. Although it is recommended for use in gastric ulcer, a decrease in motility can result in the retention of acid and hence sometimes exacerbate the erosive process.
Methixene is a slightly yellow viscous liquid, while the HCl salt is white flakes or crystalline powder. Both the base and the salt taste bitter. The powder of the salt is stable in air but darkens slowly as a result of light action. While the methixene base is water insoluble, its hydrochloride salt is soluble in water, alcohol, and chloroform but insoluble in ether. And its side-effect is the same Atropine.
