Mebendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic, it is strongly bound to the worm’s beta microtubules protein tubulin under very low concentration. It interferes with the carbohydrate metabolism and associated energy production of the parasite, inhibits the polymerization of microtubules, and eventually causes selective disappearance of cytoplasmic microtubules in the tegumental and intestinal cells and the slow immobilization and death of the worms by selectively and irreversibly blocking uptake of glucose and other nutrients in susceptible intestine where helminthes dwell. It is also an uncoupler of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation resulting in inhibition of the mitochondrial fumarate reductase and impairing glucose transferring and ATP-synthesis.
