Vortioxetine ?Description

Vortioxetine is used to treat depression. Vortioxetine is in a class of medications called serotonin modulators. It works mainly by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.

Vortioxetine is considered a new multimodal antidepressant. It has demonstrated antagonistic properties at 5-HT3A and 5-HT7 receptors, partial agonistic properties at 5-HT1B receptors, agonistic properties at 5-HT1A receptors, and potent inhibition of the serotonin reuptake transporter. Of note, preclinical data suggest that these multiple (and in combination) unique effects on numerous serotonin receptors result in regional increases in noradrenaline and dopamine as well as glutamatergic transmission.

Vortioxetine Recomended Dose

The recommended starting dose is 10 mg administered orally once daily without regard to meals.
The dose should then be increased to 20 mg/day, as tolerated.
Consider 5 mg/day for patients who do not tolerate higher doses .
Vortioxetine can be discontinued abruptly. However, it is recommended that doses of 15 mg/day or 20 mg/day be reduced to 10 mg/day for one week prior to full discontinuation if possible.
The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg/day in known CYP2D6 poor metabolizers.

How should this medicine be used

Vortioxetine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food once a day.

Take vortioxetine at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take vortioxetine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor may adjust your dose of vortioxetine depending on how well you respond to treatment and whether you experience side effects. Be sure to talk to your doctor about how you are feeling during your treatment with vortioxetine.

It may take 2 to 4 weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit of vortioxetine. Continue to take vortioxetine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking vortioxetine without talking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking vortioxetine, you may experience side effects including headache, muscle stiffness, mood swings, outbursts of anger, dizziness, or runny nose. Your doctor may decrease your dose gradually.
