Tacrolimus Description

Tacrolimus ointment helps reduce inflammatory skin reactions. It is prescribed for people with moderate-to-severe eczema, usually as an alternative to other treatments such as steroid creams or ointments. It is applied topically (on to the skin) to reduce symptoms such as inflammation, redness and itching. Tacrolimus ointment is available in two strengths: 0.03% and 0.1%. Only the lower, 0.03% strength, is suitable for use by children. It will be prescribed initially by a skin specialist doctor.

Tacrolimus is also available as a medicine which is taken by mouth, but this is prescribed for a completely different medical condition. There is a separate information leaflet available about this called Tacrolimus to prevent organ rejection.

 

Tacrolimus Usage

Usage 1 An immunosuppressant that blocks T cell proliferation in vitro by inhibiting the generation of several lymphokines, especially IL-2. Shown to inhibit the activity of FK-506 binding protein, thereby reversing its effects on sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca+2 release.
Usage 2 FK-506 (Tacrolimus) is a macrolide immunosuppressive drug that is mainly used after allogeneic organ transplant to reduce the activity of the patient's immune system
Usage 3 Tacrolimus (fujimycin) was discovered as a potent inhibitor of IL2 production in a targeted search for novel immunosuppressants. Tacrolimus acts by blocking T cell proliferation in vitro by inhibiting the generation of several lymphokines, notably the original target IL-2. Tacrolimus inhibits the activity of FK-506 binding protein, Ca2+-dependent phosphatase and calcineurin, and activates NF-κB through phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα.

How to use Tacrolimus
