Chemical Name: (2R,cis)-4-amino-1-(2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-oxathiolan-5-yl)-(1H)-pyrimidin-2-one Molecular Formula: C 8H11N3O3S Molecular Weight: 229.3 …
Chemical Name: (2R,cis)-4-amino-1-(2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-oxathiolan-5-yl)-(1H)-pyrimidin-2-one Molecular Formula: C 8H11N3O3S Molecular Weight: 229.3 Mechanism of Action: Lamivudine (3TC) is a synthetic nucleoside analogue. Intracellularly, lamivudine is phosphorylated to its active 5’-triphosphate metabolite, Lamivudine triphosphate (L-TP). The principal mode of action of L-TP is inhibition of reverse transcriptase (RT) via DNA chain termination after incorporation of the nucleoside analogue. L-TP is a weak inhibitor of mammalian DNA polymerases α and β, and mitochondrial DNA polymerases-γ. Indication and Usage: Lamivudine is used in the treatment of the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or hepatitis B virus. HIV is the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivudine is taken together with Zidovudine (AZT) or other medications used to treat HIV. Lamivudine is also used to treat hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections.
