What is Dexamethasone

Dexamethasone is a synthetic (man-made) corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are naturally-occurring chemicals produced by the adrenal glands located above the kidneys. Corticosteroids affect the function of many cells within the body and suppress the immune system. Corticosteroids also block inflammation and are used in a wide variety of inflammatory diseases affecting many organs. The FDA approved dexamethasone in October 1958.

What Dexamethasone Is Used For:

1. As an anti-inflammatory medication. Dexamethasone relieves inflammation in various parts of the body. It is used specifically to decrease swelling (edema), associated with tumors of the spine and brain, and to treat eye inflammation.
2. To treat or prevent allergic reactions.
3. As treatment of certain kinds of autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, asthma and other lung conditions.
4. As treatment for a variety of cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. 
5. To treat nausea and vomiting associated with some chemotherapy drugs.
6. Used to stimulate appetite in cancer patients with severe appetite problems. 
7. Used to replace steroids in conditions of adrenal insufficiency (low production of needed steroids produced by the adrenal glands).
